␣⌘Today’s budget

Today by line (0.71.3) cut it down, but a busy morning across many projects still runs long. Here Today holds a few rows per project and a dozen or so in all. Finishing, then squashing, makes room for the next ones. The left panel is Today as built; the right has the budget. Tick boxes, open “N more”, and use the ⋮’s Squash Done to watch the budget refill.

How the budget fills

  1. Focus and #p0 stay free. The focus card and the #p0 card always show, and the focus’s own row in its section doesn’t take a slot.
  2. Then in order: #p1, lines touched today, then lines touched yesterday, newest first within each. A row goes in while its project has room and Today has room.
  3. Rows keep their file order. The budget picks which rows show; they still sit in their sections in the order the file has them, so nothing reads shuffled.
  4. “N more” opens in place. A project that has more than its share ends with “N more”. Projects that got no room at all fold into one closing line, “N more in K projects”, which opens to list them, as Quiet (N) does.
  5. Done rows keep their slots. A row you finish stays, struck through, so the list doesn’t jump under your click. Squash Done (in the ⋮, or a project’s right-click menu) clears them, and the next rows arrive in their place with a Sage tint that fades.
  6. #p1: “Counts” spends the budget on #p1 first, so a project with many can still fill only its share. “Always shows” keeps every #p1 in view, outside both caps, as Today does now.

Questions

  1. Start at 3 rows per project and 12 in all, then tune in playtest (yes/no)?
  2. Should #p1 count against the budget (Counts), rather than always show?
  3. Projects with no room left: fold them into one closing “N more in K projects” line (A), or list each project’s heading with its own “N more” (B)?
  4. Should an opened “N more” stay open until you leave Today (A), or fold again when the list next refreshes (B)?
  5. Should the progress line keep counting every task in Today, hidden ones too (A), or only the rows on screen (B)?
  6. Should ideas share the same budget as tasks (yes/no)?
